When does a tooth need to come out?

Only when it can't be saved. If a fracture is too deep, the bone support is gone, or infection has done too much damage, we tell you plainly and go through replacement options: a dental implant, a bridge or a partial denture. When a root canal can save the tooth, that's usually the better long-term choice.

  • Common reasons: a tooth fractured too deep to restore, bone support that is gone, an infection that has done too much damage, or a wisdom tooth that is impacted or keeps getting infected.
  • Saving the tooth first: saving a natural tooth is almost always preferable to removing it. Extraction leads to bone loss and the cost of replacement, so if a root canal can save the tooth, we say so.
  • Not every problem tooth needs to come out: if a wisdom tooth is healthy, fully erupted and easy to clean, monitoring it is often the better choice, and we tell you so rather than book a procedure you don't need.
  • Pain that stopped on its own: pain sometimes stops because the nerve has died while the infection continues quietly. It still needs looking at.

What happens at a tooth extraction visit?

We start with an exam and a low-radiation digital x-ray to see the position of the roots and how close the tooth sits to the nerve or sinus. That tells us whether a simple extraction is enough or the tooth needs to be sectioned to come out cleanly, and it lets us quote an accurate fee before you book.

  1. Call or request online. Call (604) 238-6666 or send the form below. Tell us what's wrong, when it started and which language you prefer, and bring your CDCP or insurance details.
  2. Exam and x-ray. We find the cause, show you the x-ray and explain what we see.
  3. Estimate before treatment. You get a written estimate, including what your plan is expected to cover. Nothing starts without your OK.
  4. The extraction. The area is fully frozen with local anesthetic, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. A single wisdom tooth usually takes 20 to 40 minutes. Oral sedation is available for anxious patients; a responsible adult must bring you in and take you home, and you cannot drive afterwards.
  5. Aftercare. You leave with written aftercare instructions: what's normal, what isn't and when to call us.
  6. Replacing the tooth, if needed. We go through dental implants, bridges and partial dentures with realistic timelines and costs.

Can I get an emergency tooth extraction in Richmond?

Often, yes. We keep time for same-day emergency visits Tuesday to Saturday, for new and existing patients. After the exam and x-ray, where time allows we treat the problem at the same visit, which can include removing the tooth; otherwise we make you comfortable, protect the tooth and book the next step. Same-day visits are not always guaranteed.

  • Call early: call (604) 238-6666 as early in the day as you can for the best chance of being seen today. We're open Tuesday 10am–6pm, Wednesday and Thursday 9am–5pm, Friday 9am–6pm and Saturday 10am–4pm; closed Sundays, Mondays, statutory holidays and Saturdays on long weekends.
  • Swelling is urgent: severe swelling, especially swelling affecting your eye, throat or breathing, needs attention the same day. If swelling makes it hard to breathe or swallow, or bleeding won't stop with firm pressure, go to the nearest hospital emergency department (Richmond Hospital, 7000 Westminster Hwy) or call 911.
  • While you wait: rinse with warm water, take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed and hold a cold compress on your cheek. Don't put a painkiller tablet directly on the gum.
  • No inflated emergency fees: emergency and surgical treatment follow the same BC Dental Association fee guide as everything else here.
  • When we're closed: send a request through the form below and we call you back when we open. For nurse advice at any hour, call HealthLink BC at 8-1-1. More first aid: emergency dentist in Richmond.

Do you remove wisdom teeth in Richmond?

Yes. Most wisdom teeth are removed here in-house under local anaesthetic. Dr. Ghadiri and Dr. Ho assess and remove wisdom teeth for simple cases, and Dr. Park, who focuses much of his practice on surgical dentistry, handles impacted wisdom teeth by prior appointment. All four can often be removed in one visit if that suits you.

  • Signs a wisdom tooth may need to come out: aching or pressure at the back of the jaw; a swollen, tender or bleeding gum behind your last molar; repeated infections around a partly erupted tooth; crowding or pressure on the molar in front; jaw stiffness on one side.
  • Recovery, realistically: expect some swelling and tenderness for two to three days, usually peaking around day two. Most people feel noticeably better by day three or four and are fully healed within one to two weeks; many are back at work or school the next day.
  • Referrals: many wisdom teeth can be removed here. If a case is complex enough to need a specialist, we say so plainly and help arrange the referral.
  • Full details: see wisdom teeth extractions in Richmond and meet our dentists.

How much does a tooth extraction cost in Richmond?

We don't post a price list because the fee depends on the tooth and whether a simple extraction is enough or it needs to be sectioned. Every fee follows the BC Dental Association fee guide with no markup, and you get a written estimate after the x-ray and before you commit. CDCP and most insurance plans are billed directly.

  • CDCP: we accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) and bill it directly. If a co-payment applies to you, we tell you the amount before treatment. Some services need approval from the plan first. How CDCP works at DTC
  • Private insurance: we bill most major insurance plans directly. Root canals and extractions are commonly covered treatments, and we confirm your specific coverage before you commit.
  • No insurance: you pay the same BCDA fee guide rates as everyone else, with no hidden markups.
  • Emergency visits: no inflated emergency fees; emergency and surgical treatment follow the same fee guide. How our fees work

What should I expect after a tooth extraction?

You leave with written aftercare instructions: what's normal, what isn't, and when to call us. Our wisdom teeth page sums up the basics: soft, cool foods for the first day or two; no straws, smoking or hard, crunchy food while the site closes over; over-the-counter pain relief and cold compresses for soreness.

  • Soreness: soreness for a few days afterward is normal and usually manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.
  • Something doesn't feel right? Call (604) 238-6666.
  • Replacing the tooth: if the tooth needs replacing, we plan it with you: a dental implant, a bridge or a partial denture.
  • Where we are: 6011 No. 1 Rd, Unit 120, Richmond, BC, in Terra Nova, with free parking at the door. Our team speaks English, Mandarin, Cantonese and Farsi.
