Open Tuesday to Saturday

Looking for an emergency dentist near you in Richmond? DTC Dental Treatment Center is on No. 1 Road in Terra Nova, with free on-site parking at the door. Dental pain doesn't wait for a convenient appointment, so we hold space for same-day emergencies and see new patients as well as our own. Emergency care is billed at the same BC Dental Association fee guide rates as every other visit.

Is it a dental emergency?

  • Severe toothache. Throbbing pain, pain that wakes you at night, or sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers. This usually means decay or a crack has reached the nerve. If the pain stops on its own, still get it checked.
  • Broken or chipped tooth. A chipped tooth almost always has a same-day fix. Small chips are usually repaired with tooth-coloured bonding; a larger break may need a crown to protect it.
  • Knocked-out tooth. Minutes matter. Follow the first-aid steps below and call us right away.
  • Swelling or abscess. Swollen gums, face or jaw, a pimple on the gum or a bad taste can all mean infection. Infection needs treatment the same day, not wait-and-see.
  • Lost filling or crown. Keep the crown if you have it and chew on the other side. We'll replace or protect the tooth, often in a short visit.
  • Wisdom tooth pain. Swollen, tender or bleeding gum behind your last molar, a bad taste, or jaw stiffness on one side. Most wisdom teeth are removed here in-house under local anaesthetic. Wisdom teeth removal

What to do right now

  • Toothache: Rinse with warm water and floss gently. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed. Hold a cold compress on your cheek. Don't put a painkiller tablet directly on the gum.
  • Knocked-out adult tooth: Pick it up by the crown, not the root. If it's dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or water; don't scrub it. If you can, put it back in the socket and bite gently on a clean cloth. If you can't, keep it moist in milk. Call (604) 238-6666 and come in immediately.
  • Knocked-out baby tooth: Don't put it back in. Call us so we can check your child's mouth.
  • Broken or chipped tooth: Save any pieces. Rinse with warm water, use a cold compress for swelling, and cover a sharp edge with sugar-free gum or dental wax.
  • Lost filling or crown: Keep the crown in a clean container and don't glue it back with household glue.
  • Swelling: Use a cold compress on the outside of your face, not heat. Don't try to pop a gum bump.
  • Bleeding: Bite firmly on clean gauze for 20–30 minutes.

Go to a hospital emergency department or call 911 now if swelling makes it hard to breathe or swallow, swelling spreads toward your eye or neck, you've had a jaw or head injury, or bleeding won't stop with firm pressure. The nearest ER is Richmond Hospital, 7000 Westminster Hwy.

What happens at your emergency visit

  1. Call us. Tell us what happened, when it started and which language you prefer. We'll find the earliest time we can see you.
  2. Check in. Free parking at the door. Bring your CDCP or insurance details and we'll bill your plan directly.
  3. Exam and a low-radiation digital x-ray. We find the cause, show you the x-ray and explain what we see.
  4. Clear options and an estimate. You get an estimate before treatment begins. Nothing starts without your OK.
  5. Relief. The area is fully numbed. Where time allows we treat the problem at the same visit, for example bonding a chip, draining an infection or removing a tooth. Otherwise we make you comfortable, protect the tooth and book the next step. Oral sedation is available for anxious patients.
  6. Aftercare. You leave with written instructions: what's normal, what isn't, and when to call us.

  • An estimate before treatment. Once we've seen the x-ray, you get an estimate before treatment begins, including what your plan is expected to cover.
  • CDCP and insurance, billed directly. We accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan and most major dental insurance plans, and bill providers directly. How CDCP works at DTC
  • No insurance? You pay the same BCDA fee guide rates, with no hidden markups.
